[11세기 말서부터 18세기 초까지의 영국문학사] 이 책은 영국의 시뿐만 아니라 산문과 희곡 등 모든 장르를 다 포함한 영국 문학사로서 여러 가지 불비한 점에도 불구하고 주목할 만한 선구적 연구서이다. 1권은 노르만족의 정복서부터 초서(Chaucer)까지, 2권은 존 가우어 (Hohn Gower)서부터 존 스켈톤(John Skelton)까지, 3권은 써리(Surrey)경서부터 엘리자베스조 끝까지를 취급하고 있다. 제목과 내용이 일치하지 않는 이유는 17세기 후반부터 포프까지를 논한 4권은 끝내 집필되지 못했기 때문이다. 1권에는 "On the origin of romantic fiction in europe’’ 과 "On the introduction of learning into England" 라는 논문들이, 3권에는 "On the gesta anorum'’ 이라는 논문이 본문 앞에 게재되어 있다. 토마스 튼은 옥스포드대학의 교수였다. 2권 말미에 일종의 정오표 및 부록이라고 볼 수 있는 "Emendations and additions in the first and second Volume” 이 첨가되어 있음.
